Are opossums dangerous?

They're rarely aggressive and their body temperature makes rabies very uncommon. The real problems are the parasites they carry and the mess they leave in a crawlspace.

Should I just leave it alone?

If it's passing through the yard, yes — they eat ticks and grubs. If it's denning under your house, no. The den fouls insulation and ductwork, and the open entry eventually invites something worse.
