Are opossums dangerous?
They're rarely aggressive and their body temperature makes rabies very uncommon. The real problems are the parasites they carry and the mess they leave in a crawlspace.
Should I just leave it alone?
If it's passing through the yard, yes — they eat ticks and grubs. If it's denning under your house, no. The den fouls insulation and ductwork, and the open entry eventually invites something worse.
Do they climb into attics?
They can, usually via a tree limb into an entry another animal already opened. Attic opossums almost always mean there's an older, unrepaired hole.
How do you keep them from digging back under?
Skirting and vent screening get buried and L-footed outward below grade, so digging along the edge hits mesh instead of soil.
